“Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10

It’s Crazy Out There

Now I know I’ve seen everything. And just when I thought life couldn’t get any weirder. Talk about a multi-tasking culture, I was dumbfounded yesterday as I drove downtown.

To my amazement, a fellow was weaving in and out of traffic on his bicycle, smoking a cigarette, AND talking on his cell phone—bless his heart, all at the same time.  Seriously? To be honest, I prayed he’d live long enough to find Jesus, just in case he hadn’t.

Who hasn’t found that in recent years, we’re being pushed, prodded and jabbed to go faster, do more, be all to everyone, and accomplish five things at once? I’ve wondered at times if some unseen force (yuh think?) is responsible to make us all loony by the time we reach adulthood or die of “information overload.”

More and more people seem unable to hold an eyeball-to-eyeball conversation.  We’re distracted, and I’m probably the worst one out there at times. What really messes me up is when the morning gets going before I do. What I mean is, I jump out of bed, and obligations drag me into the day before I’ve really had time to be still before the Lord—even for a few minutes.

What a difference it makes when I make that time to ask the Lord’s blessing and direction—what’s really important today, Lord? What’s on YOUR agenda? Often I find that His agenda is nowhere near as insane as what I was driving myself to accomplish.

I used to fear that laziness and sloth (like those incredibly adorable, slow-motion creatures) would be my biggest problems, but I’ve realized that driving myself with a whip is just as destructive. The Lord calls us to a life of balance and peace. And when my peace is disturbed, I’m sorry to say that old adage is true in our house: “When Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”

“Lord, please help us to s-l-o-w down, hear from You, and keep the main thing, the main thing. This day is about YOU! YOU! YOU! Not me, me, me. And I’m so, so glad!  Amen!”
