“Then they asked Him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” John 6:28

What Can We Expect?

Unmet expectations are one of our greatest enemies. When we don’t get our way we often have pity parties, blame others and blame God. When we don’t do what is expected of us the same things can be a result. So what should we reasonably expect from God and what does He expect from us? I went on a search and found the following:

GOD WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU

“The LORD Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8

GOD HAS GREAT PLANS FOR YOUR LIFE

“’For I know the plans I have for you,’” declares the LORD, “’plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”  Jeremiah 29:11

GOD HAS PROVIDED ETERNAL LIFE WITH HIMSELF

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10

GOD PROVIDES ALL YOUR NEEDS

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or “What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:31-33 (NOTICE: what we need, not necessarily what we want.)

So what does God expect from us?

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

Let’s now hear the answer to the question posed in the opening verse:

“Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.’” John 6:29

Our expectations are met in the person of Jesus Christ alone. Seek Him first today.

Precious Jesus, we acknowledge You today as our only hope, provision, and love. Help us to obey You in whatever comes our way. Amen.
