“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us…” Ephesians 3:20 ESV

Power Outage

Have you ever felt that your heart has become dry, cold and dark?

48 hours into our “power fast” I was still walking into my bathroom (flashlight in hand) and turning on the light switch. Surprise! Nothing happened. Then I remembered: oh, that’s right—all our power is off. Without power, nothing worked! Being on an electronically pumped well system, we had no water, no heat, and no lights. Rote behavior continued until the power was restored, which made me think about the power of our habits. How strong are the imprints on our lives of the things we do repetitiously? They become so mechanical we don’t even have to think about them. We just do them.

Sometimes we can become so busy “doing” that we deplete all the energy stored in our spiritual power grid. The power has gone out of our spiritual lives. We keep “doing” but NOTHING HAPPENS.

What does it take to remind you that the power is off in your soul? A song that usually brings you into worship now does nothing to stir your soul? Maybe you just don’t feel like making the effort to attend church on Sunday or Wednesday night? We can go to church, but if there is no power in our heart, nothing happens.

Has someone displeased you or hurt you and you can’t get over your negative feelings for that person? You try to turn on the switch but the power does not go on in your life. How long has it been since you were contrite before the Lord over the distance you feel between you and Him?

Is your “spiritual gauge” telling you that you need to reconnect to the Power Source of God? “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness’”… (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV)

“We are totally dependent on Your power alone, Lord. Help us plug into the power of Your Word every day, set aside time to dwell in Your Word, and let Your Word soak into our souls. Water our thirsty souls, warm our cold hearts and light up Your Spirit within us. We ask for the power of Your presence. Search our hearts for anything that displeases You. We ask for a broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart which You say You will not deny. We bask in Your presence as we worship and pray. You see our need; fill us with the power of Your love. We pray as Paul prayed in Colossians 1:11, that we would be ‘strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that (we) may have great endurance and patience…’ May we walk in Your strength and Your power.”
