“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” Psalm 139:7, 8

God Pursues Us

I received an email a few days ago that I wanted to tell you about. It was from a young man who has gone through some very difficult situations. He had known God, but had become disillusioned and discouraged. His brother had been badly beaten. The police had turned a blind eye. He was homeless and impoverished. Life itself had become too hard to bear. He had decided to take his life.

He had gone to a railway station in the middle of the night. The platform was deserted, and he planned to jump from an overpass into the path of a train to end his life. As he was sitting on the empty platform waiting for a train to come, someone walked up to him. The man said to him, “Brother, I feel I’m to bless you with a book because God has a plan for your life. God is going to use you to touch many lives.” He handed him a copy of Floyd’s book, You See Bones, I See an Army.

The young man started to read the book, and recommitted his life to the Lord then and there! I was amazed at the story—an empty train station in the middle of the night! Why was someone there with Floyd’s book right at that moment? Was it an angel? Perhaps a very obedient Christian that God had told to get out of bed and go wait there? Only God knows. But the man certainly spoke God’s heart to this young man.

Floyd cried when I told him the story. I reminded him that he can’t speak, but his voice isn’t silent. And I also talked with Floyd about how much God loves us. He never abandons us. He is constantly pursuing us in our various situations and circumstances—just as He was pursuing that young man on the train platform in the middle of the night. How loving, merciful, and persistent He is!

God loves us in spite of our sin, our failures, our weaknesses, even in spite of our anger towards Him when we feel He’s let us down. He never lets us go. He never forgets what we’re going through. He never just leaves us in hard times. He reaches out to us and pursues us.

I was deeply touched by this story. For Floyd and me, for each of us—God is with us, looking for ways to speak to us and help us. He never, ever gives up! He never stops reaching into our situations to help us.

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5).

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

This young man’s story was a poignant reminder of God’s love, faithfulness, concern, and constant pursuit of us in life’s situations. How awesome He is!

“Father, Your promises to us are very great. We worship You.”
