“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

Spider, Mosquito, or other Bug?

Have you ever noticed how something the size of a nickel can consume your thoughts, capture your focus, and redirect your agenda? Irritating? Annoying? Absolutely!

I have taken note of how obsessed I can become when the bite on my foot renders me completely out of touch with whatever I was doing or planning to do. I don’t know what kind of bug or insect bit me, and it doesn’t matter. What matters is how much attention I am giving this bug’s venom. This is the dictionary definition of venomthe poisonous fluid that some animals, as certain snakes and spiders, secrete and introduce into the bodies of their victims by biting, stinging, etc.Or: something resembling or suggesting poison in its effect; spite; malice: the venom of jealousy; there was venom in his stinging, biting comments.

COVID-19 continues, and the political agenda speeds forward toward the November election date. We are witnessing more and more venom everywhere we turn. The television, the internet, social media, no comment is left without seemingly stirring up some venomous, stinging, biting comments in one or more persons.

There is an antidote. Don’t take the bait, don’t bite the apple. If you think the person is wrong, think about just letting them be wrong. Chances are that you are not going to be the one to persuade them to change their mind.

Instead of making a comment, make a prayer. God is the only One Who can change hearts and minds. Our pastor says, “If I can talk you into something, then someone else can talk you out of it.” Let the Holy Spirit do the work in that person as you do the praying.

Redirect your thinking to Psalm 23 or Psalm 139 or any of the Psalms or favorite scriptures. Don’t let the venom steal your joy or disturb your peace. Take your thoughts captive, and think on things that are lovely and beautiful—for example, Jesus.

Help us, Lord God, when we are sometimes surrounded by evil, to take comfort in You, our peace and joy. You, Lord, are our refuge and fortress in You we trust. May we hide Your Word in our hearts and abide in You, impacting those around us with Your unconditional love.
