“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” Matthew 6:6

The Secret Place

In that “secret place” God meets us! I’m so thankful that I can pray my joys, hurts and frustrations to Him, and know my heavenly Father hears. I can confess my sins, knowing He is gracious and forgives me. When I unload these things in secret, He is so good to refresh and renew my mind by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in me and is my Helper (John 14:16). He makes all things right again when I give them over, come humble, open-handed, and willing to obey. His truth corrects and restores, and I’m so grateful!

I have the opportunity to travel with my husband on business trips. Although he enjoys my company, I throw him off his game. Recently, something critical had been forgotten that caused reactive words which were a bit hurtful. In God’s goodness and grace, He directed and solved the problem and conflict. But in my morning quiet time the hurtful feelings surfaced. I needed to vent before my Father and allow Him to take over the situation completely. I received His peace and was humbled because of my selfishness, which had added to the problem. Things happen and nothing is perfect, but keeping my eyes on the LORD, being in prayer, help tremendously. All was resolved and refreshed in the secret place where the LORD meets us each personally.

Often if I wake up during the night and can’t get back to sleep, I remember Psalm 91 and say the verses in my mind. Normally I’m back to sleep before the end because the reality of this precious scripture gives great peace: “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God; in Him I will trust.’” (Psalm 91:1-2). The secret place where He meets each of us personally is our refuge where we can dwell! My woes turn to worship, and joy grips my heart in this secret place. Our reward is God’s presence in our lives.

I’m very thankful that the LORD commands us in the verse above to come to this secret place, shut the door and pray. This is where He gives us direction, peace of mind, wisdom, and the grace to obey, and fills us with His love. This is all for His glory, our good, and the good of those in our lives daily.

Lord, we are so blessed that You call us and meet us in the secret place. Father, help us to come completely open and exposed before You, allowing You to forgive, restore our minds, and direct our day for Your glory and our good. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
