“And the LORD said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry and why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door and its desire is for you; but you must rule over it.’Genesis 4:6-7

Overcoming

When reading the above verse, I think about an ugly monster, hiding on my front porch on a dark night, ready to grab me unaware. Usually it’s the disappointment about something or someone that brings me down and frustrates me, and maybe turns to anger. Instead of giving over the failure or misjudgment to the Lord and praying, I let it fester, not moving onward and upward.

As soon as that ugly monster creeps up, I need not entertain it. I could sooth my hurting soul by going shopping or turning on the TV, but a better solution is turning to the Lord.

In time, by listening to worship music, going to my knees and praying, or reading the Word, God grabs my heart again and puts me in the right place.

Two Scriptures teach us how to do this: “…casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5), and “Casting all your care upon Him, because He cares for You” (1 Peter 5:7). Don’t play with the ugly thing at the door, but allow Christ to rule over it.

Sometimes we need to step out in faith into a new ministry, focus on the one we’re in, visit a sick friend, write a card, or take my neighbor flowers—get out of my selfish state and focus on things above. There are incredible views there that lighten the heart and totally change the “doldrums” or “down in the dumps” to joy, singing, and new perspective!

In not allowing that thing to stay on my porch tantalizing me, I’m free! “Now the Lord is Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17). Allowing the Lord to be in the forefront of my thoughts, I’m confident and know that “thing” can’t touch me. I’m protected in His grace, glory and victory!

Praying the Lord meets you today in your heart of hearts, lifting you in His presence and care.

“Lord, please lift our countenance to Your joy and pleasures beyond our imagination. We know You will accomplish those things that concern us. In Jesus’ mighty Name, Amen.”
