“Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” Psalm 24:8

Mighty Mite

Working in a Christian bookstore, you sometimes are blessed to get to know some of the men and women whose writings grace the bookshelves. Hal Lindsey, author of Late Great Planet Earth (first released in 1970) nicknamed me “Mighty Mite.” I thought it was because I was “mighty,” but he may have been referring to “mite,” which would make me mighty irritating, hugely annoying, and immensely painful. Hmmm.

Definition of mighty as an adjective: possessing impressive power or strength, especially on account of size.

As an adverb: extremely, exceedingly, enormously, immensely, tremendously, and hugely.

Definition of mite: Very little, a bit, or a very small creature that is irritating, annoying and painful.

I don’t want to be anything but mighty for the Lord; however, in this frail body of human flesh, I fail to be that mighty powerhouse for the Lord.Depending on the day, I am certain that I could be irritating, annoying, and probably cause pain as well. I find encouragement that Jesus said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Another reminder from Paul is, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Advertisers use words like “Ram tough” to depict strength. My heart’s desire is to be “Jesus tough.”

We are in a war. Warriors need to be tough, strong and mighty. Paul challenged the Ephesians in chapter 6 to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. He even told them how: “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Paul reminds us that we are at war against principalities, powers, and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

In the mirror, I start at the top and work my way down so that I don’t forget anything. First, the helmet of salvation goes on my head, and then I put on the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, and then reach to my feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Next, I take up the shield of faith to quench fiery darts of the wicked one. Of course, we need the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. There is no armor for the backside, so we must stand and face our enemy. Paul adds praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and to be watchful. I’d say that’s good advice for today!

“Help me, Lord! I want to be ‘Jesus tough!’ Help me to be mighty in Your strength through Your Spirit, and not an irritating, painful, annoyance that people want to avoid. Amen!”
