“The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament shows His handiwork.” Psalm 19:1

God’s Reason

I was asked recently, “Why did God create the universe?” “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). At first I thought of the joy it brings us to gaze into a clear night sky, looking at the multitude of stars and heavenly bodies; to see a full moon is a special gift that lights the night sky. One reason He created the universe is to bless us with His magnificent beauty.

Another reason is to show an unbelieving world his truth. Romans 1:20 says, “Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so they are without excuse.” God’s heavenly display shows the obvious facts of creation with a superior being that has sovereign control. But they want to believe man is the supreme ruler. Science itself proves by the third law of thermodynamics that everything is in a state of decay. The universe didn’t just happen. I’ve heard recently it takes more faith to believe in evolution than it does to believe God created all. God is Sovereign and He does what He pleases. He also loves us and desires for us to behold His beauty, especially the beauty of salvation in His Son, Jesus Christ.

I also think God is a magnificent artist revealing His Glory to make known His hugeness, extreme intelligence, vastness, design and beauty. Words can’t explain. As Psalm 19 says, the heavens declare and reveal His glory! Every part of creation reveals His ability to create the magnitude of the universe in a spoken word. Of course He can manage my petty life problems! With a God so magnificently vast, how can we not trust Him? He created each one of us also, for His glory and purpose.

Only God has the ultimate answer to the question about creation, but I choose to rest in His beauty and divine control, trusting He has “the whole world in His capable hands.” To Him be the glory!

And, You Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands” (Hebrew 1:10).

One day the heavens will be gone (Isaiah 34—dissolved, rolled up like a garment) to make room for the new heavens and the new earth. We have so much mystery to look forward to! Today we can trust in His love, because if He cares for the universe, He certainly cares for us!

“Lord, we don’t have to worry or fret. You made the universe for Your glory and purpose; now we enjoy its beauty, but one day we will know as we are known (1 Corinthians 13:12). Until then we trust You! Thank You, Jesus!”
