“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” Psalm 119:35
Letting Christ Direct My Day
Life is measured in time—seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, etc. Every day is a beautiful 24-hour gift given to us by God. How we spend our time is up to us for the most part. Of course, some planning is necessary to maneuver through each day. However, I have found that vast quantities of my own time and energy are wasted in obsessive planning and endless to-do lists. I get discouraged by not completing my own silly list. I recently discovered that when I am able to really let Jesus direct my steps, I am set free to enjoy Him and to find what He has planned for me that day. This brings me such great delight!
I’ve tried something new to be more open each day to what God is really doing in my life. After spending quiet time alone in the morning, I share with God that I have a whole list of things that “I think” need to be done, but then I ask Him, “What do you want me to do today, Lord?” “Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life” (Psalm 143:8).
God doesn’t just speak immediately and tell me what I should do, but as my day unfolds, He brings opportunities along my way to be used by Him. I am purposely being open to slow down my own busy life just a little. God has amazed me by blessing me through allowing this extra time in my day for “His plans” and, miraculously, everything on my list that must get done, does! Anything that didn’t get done really wasn’t important.
God has opened up new doors of opportunity by prompting my heart to stop, talk and listen to a neighbor, a store clerk, or maybe sending a card to someone God puts on my heart that day. Sometimes it’s just stopping to pray with someone with an immediate need, or being extra kind when I’m out in the public. This may sound simple to you and something you already are doing in your own life, but for me this was a huge new eye-opening lesson!
When we are walking with God each day and letting Him direct us, we can walk more purposely with Him and make a difference anywhere He takes us. We know that these special moments are from Him and we can give Him all the praise and glory.
Thank You, Lord, that You can use each one of us right where we are—in our homes, at school, at work, in ministry or just living our lives to take time to look up and bless others with Your love and light in us!
Amen Sister!!!
Love this, thank you. (I too am a list maker!)
I’ve been slowing down for a few years now, but in our productivity-crazed culture it’s hard to feel useful sometimes. I needed this reminder to “bloom where I’m planted” and that God sees the little things, too. I asked him how to reflect His light at the gym, and was blessed when I went that afternoon. He opened my eyes to new people and conversations. Thank for a God-timed reminder!
