“…and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which is translated, God with us.” Matthew 1:23
Love’s Revelation
Walk His Way Revisited
In the stillness of eternity before space and time, the Eternal Godhead longed for intimacy with a creature who would love Him freely and willingly. God is love and that great love desired an expression of all that He was. And so the Spirit of God hovered over the waters of a planet void and empty. Mankind was born in the image of God and into his nostrils was breathed the very breath of God. Man became a living being.
The celestial angels, seraphim and cherubim, wondered in amazement. What was this? This strange being who could not only love and worship and sing and pray, but who could also reject, rebel, and refuse the Great I Am. For you see, in order for love to be true, it must be freely given. The Father was willing to love mankind despite the risk of rejection. He was willing to be hurt. He was willing to be grieved. He was willing to sacrifice all for this divine romance.
God can never be anything but what He is. He is not only love, but He is also holy and He is just. Mankind soon came to grips with the reality of sin, and sin brought death. They had freely chosen to reject the things of God and grasp at empty promises. They were deceived and disobedient and now they were fallen and overshadowed by the curse of sin and death.
Some frazzled angel must have thought, “I knew this crazy idea would never work! These foolish creatures are not holy. They cannot live in God’s presence. Now what will become of them?” But God had always known what would be required and He was willing to do that very thing from the beginning. His love overcame. His holiness was displayed. His justice was satisfied.
Man desperately needed a Savior. A Redeemer was required. On a cold night in Bethlehem was born One who would be our Rescue. He saw us from afar and loved us with an everlasting and unshakeable love. He came to do for us what we could not do for ourselves. He came from the glories and riches of heaven to be born in a stable. He was born that He might die, offering up the holy life necessary for our salvation. He is our Champion. He is the greatest superhero EVER. He is our eternal hope.
True love was manifested that long ago Christmas morning. Throughout the generations we look back to that glad day and know beyond all doubt that His love never fails. Each year we remember and celebrate again the goodness and grace of God to us. He Himself is the gift of eternal love. Merry Christmas indeed!
Father, what a glorious love You have lavished on us. The angels hold their breath to see this grand display of faithful devotion to us as your children. We celebrate You! Amen.
