“And He said, ‘Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from and where are you going?’” Genesis 16:8

An Important Question

Walk His Way Revisited

The question God asked Hagar, “Where have you come from and where are you going?” is a question asked not because God doesn’t know the answer. Rather, it is a question that penetrates our own soul. It requires our heart to answer, and if answered honestly, God’s truth and purposes are revealed in our lives. Not so that God might know, but that we ourselves might know. This question prompts revelation of truth in our inward parts exposing who we are, how we got to where we now find ourselves, and an eye-opening vision of where we are to go from here. In other words, who have we been in the past, who are we now, and what is our future hope?

Hagar was running and God pursued her into this dry, bleak place to question her. She had to look at the past and how she had ended up in this barren land. What would happen if God appeared and posed these questions to you? What happens when we meet God—and the Almighty questions us? We see God more clearly. We are changed.

Can you remember where you were before God met you? Take some time to remember where you have come from. It is good to rehearse in our minds the women we were then, that we might see afresh what God has done in our lives. It is a work of wonder and amazement to compare who we are today with that broken, lost woman of bygone days. God has done great things! And where are we going? A glorious eternity stretches before us. And each day left to us on this planet is laden with opportunity, blessing, hope and the anticipation of all God’s goodness to come.

Father, thank You for revolutionizing our lives. You found us in that desert place and rescued us. You have made of us a new creation. Our future burns bright with Your love. We worship the God who meets us with questions that bring into our reality the truth of who You are. You are the answer we have always needed. Bless You, God of grace. Amen.
