“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6

The Goodness of God

Once I was young, and now I am old. Looking back over all those years, the thing that rises to the forefront of my thoughts is the consistent goodness and faithfulness of God.

Once I was a crazy mess, and yet I can pinpoint times when God was there nudging me toward something better. Not that I always listened or responded to those holy nudges, but the point is that He was there with me long before I looked into His eyes and saw Him for who He was. He wooed me, He stood with me, He responded to me even in my stubborn rebellion. Oh, the goodness and faithfulness of God!

After I gave up on my own ways and submitted myself to Him, He remained the constant in my life. When my marriage was unraveling, He showed me how to love again. In my frustrations and failures in parenting, He gave me wisdom and an assurance that He was pursuing my children and ultimately the work was His, not mine. All I needed to do was trust Him.

In health crisis and dire predictions and fears, He interceded time and again to bring hope and healing. In the valley of the shadow of death, He was there overcoming in ways I could never have imagined. In financial stress, He assured that obedience to His principles would bring not only blessing, but prosperity.

He has kept me in times of danger. He has spoken peace to me in the night when my troubled soul could not find rest. He has led me into green pastures and still waters. Oh, the goodness and faithfulness of God!

“Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually” (Psalm 52:1).

“For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with goodness” (Psalm 107:9).

“Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men” (Psalm 107:21)

And so, Father, I thank You for Your goodness to me and all those who have put their trust in You. Amen.
