The Wait
Recently, I listened as another mom of a prodigal shared her fears and heartache, and again I felt that gut-wrenching pain that I know she is experiencing. I was able to share with this hurting one the things that have helped me the most.
I’ve heard it said before that a mother is only as happy as her least happy child is. Yes, we carry on, we do life, we keep our commitments, but deep within is the ache…the pain of knowing they haven’t accepted the Ultimate Gift yet. We see the lack of peace in their lives. We feel that ache when we see them wrestling around, trying to find their way on their own in this world. We experience the difficulty of realizing that we cannot accept the gift for them…they must seek and find Him out for themselves. As much as we want to provide these wandering ones the answer that we know will fill the holes in their souls, we must accept that the message of truth that finally breaks through might not come from our lips. Yes, we must continue to sow seeds as opportunities arise, but we must also trust that God has a plan that the message will be delivered.
I bring my daughter to the foot of the cross daily. I leave her there, and wait and watch what God will do. Sometimes He sends me a little encouragement that He hasn’t forgotten about my prayers—then she will say something about a Christian who has crossed her path, and I KNOW these encounters are a part of His plan to surround her with His people, a specific answer to this mama’s prayers.
He loves us so much and sees us waiting. He hears us.
There are several scriptures, including the ones above, that I cling to tightly in the wait as I remember, as the song says, “Even when I don’t see it, you’re working.”*
Lord, please help all of us who are in the wait. Thank You for the reminders that You have not forgotten our heartache and that You see us. Grant us strength to never cease praying. We look forward in anticipation to see what You will do.
Amen.
He is well able!
