“And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes had begun to grow so dim that he could not see, and before the lamp of God went out in the tabernacle of the Lord where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down, that the Lord called Samuel. And he answered, ‘Here I am!’ So he ran to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ And he said, ‘I did not call; lie down again.’ And he went and lay down. Then the Lord called yet again, ‘Samuel!’ So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ He answered, ‘I did not call, my son; lie down again.’ (Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, nor was the word of the Lord yet revealed to him.) And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. So he arose and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you did call me.’ Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy.” 1 Samuel 3:2-8
Speak Lord, For Your Servant is Listening
Walk His Way Revisited
As we read this, we find Samuel lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was located. Oh my, can you imagine laying next to the ark of the covenant? He heard a voice one night calling him. Samuel heard the voice two more times and Eli realized the third time that it was God who was calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel to go lie down and when he heard the voice again he should say, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Joel 2:28 teaches us: “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.” How powerful are the words of our Father!
There are times in our lives that we feel as though God has abandoned us, perhaps due to a busy life, illness, or our own complacency. We actually have left Him behind in this busy world. We begin feeling dry and thirsty and don’t realize that we are the ones who have sinned against Him because we have abandoned Him. We need to then look up, asking Him to once again come into our lives—and we will find that He is waiting for us to come back.
Our communication with our Father is accomplished through our devotion to Him. God will rain His precious Holy Spirit throughout our dry souls and restore us to Him if only we lift our eyes to heaven and ask Him to once again enter us.
Father God, we are so very thankful for Your resurrection. We ask that You will pour Your Holy Spirit over each one of us. Lord, do a mighty work in our lives and show Yourself to us through Your Word and the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus Christ’s holy and marvelous Name we pray.
