“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.” Philippians 4 :11-12 ESV
Contentment
Contentment. Wow! That’s saying a mouthful for sure. Are we ever content? A very long time ago, a wise woman told me when I was at a low point in my life that I would never be content, nor would I ever find contentment IF I did not find contentment right now in the very place and situation that I was in.
Contentment is a state of mind and attitude which I was showing—and not in a good way. I understood that for God to reach me, I needed to truly understand contentment. I knew this woman to be faithful and true, and I trusted her words, knowing that she was a strong woman of God. My Christian walk was just beginning and I remembered praying that night for God to help me understand contentment, the kind she was talking about and how I should proceed.
“But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content” (1 Timothy 6:6-8).
God is so faithful and good. He did show me His contentment in my life then and now, and I am still learning every day. Now grant you, even today I am not always 100% there, but I do know that God is there for me and He does not place trials and misery in my life just to make me suffer, but to teach me more of His ways and His longings for me.
This is a short, inspirational message about contentment so I will leave you with its message and its words of wisdom. I pray that you, too, will find contentment in whatever and wherever you are right at this moment. God is here for you.
- Never allow yourself to complain about anything.
- Never picture yourself in any other circumstances or some other place.
- Never compare your lot with another’s.
- Never allow yourself to wish this or that had been otherwise.
- And never dwell on tomorrow, for tomorrow belongs to God!
“For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10 ESV).
God, I pray that we all can remember that You order all of our steps. Our part is to obey and to be content with whatever You have for us on our journey. Help us, Lord, to live in contentment no matter our lot. Amen!
I wrote these points in my journal. I know I cannot fully live up to them, but I aspire to them.
