“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Psalm 23:6

The Goodness of God

Life isn’t always easy, but God is always good. He is always faithful to cover us with His peace and grace.

I’ve been so blessed lately because of how gracious and good God has been to me and my family. Of course, life stuff happens. We’ve had our share of tragedies and turmoil, but His constant presence and peace, as well as forgiveness, has been and is substantial.

The song chorus that we sing in church has been rolling in my mind, over and over: “Oh the goodness, the goodness of Jesus. Satisfied, He is all that I need. May it be, come what may, that I rest all my days, in the goodness of Jesus.”*

These lyrics are very simple, but so true and pure. His goodness truly fills in all the gaps.

I’m not a person drawn to drama, nor do I dwell on the “what ifs.” But worries sometimes wake me up in the middle of the night—a family member’s health issue, my failure in handling a situation correctly, or some other disturbance. I remember the 23rd Psalm and repeat it as it builds my hope and faith again. I let these words penetrate my thoughts instead of allowing the fear to grip me. I make a choice to trust and depend on the Lord and see myself handing the issue over to Him. Often, I have to do that over and over. It can be a battle.

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13).

Somehow, hope stays alive. God always shows up in the situation. The problem usually isn’t solved immediately, but His peace covers me like a blanket and I’m comforted. I’m overwhelmed by His sweet surprise of abundant goodness in ways I never imaged possible.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).

When your worries seem louder than your praise, remember “the goodness of Jesus” and allow Him to cover you with His goodness as you rest in His mercy that will follow you all the days of your life.

Dear Lord, thank You for Your abundant goodness that surprises us. In times of waiting, help us to remember You have our worries and have the best outcome in mind, beyond our imagination. We trust in You. Amen.
