“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:12-13
Taking God Seriously
I memorized this verse many years ago, but sometimes seem to forget to apply it, or I ignore the Lord’s still small voice saying, “This isn’t a good idea.” It could be that extra cookie, an unnecessary purchase, or a complaint I didn’t hold back from saying. Or it could be something much more serious. Usually the reason why I’m doing it is that I’m not seeking contentment in Him. Those things are empty vices of no lasting value and may involve destruction.
When I came across this in my daily reading recently, it stunned me. I felt terribly convicted for the times I’ve ignored the Lord’s loving encouragement and His generous way of escape. The verses before this in the chapter talk about the children of Israel’s disobedience in the desert and they missed out on God’s favor, worshipful fellowship, and entering the promised land. What grace and love God provides for our sake and His glory and His kingdom’s sake, to provide that way out. He does this for His beloved children.
“…Be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless” (2 Peter 3:14). God calls us to be pure and have an unhindered relationship with Him for His best in our lives. I need to be diligent to obey. There are kingdom consequences He’s impressed on my heart, even if I don’t understand and think, “What’s the big deal?” The Lord told me “No,” so I need to obey. He has important reasons. So I will stay planted in His Word, seek His direction, be purposeful to obey, and keep growing in the knowledge and grace of Jesus.
“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14).
What a privilege we have to know the King of kings and Lord of lords! We get to participate in His kingdom plan and live in His love. Taking heed to temptations and fleshly indulgences that distract us from His fullness are not worth it. I’m so thankful also that when I cry out to the Lord with an honest heart, He meets me full on and helps me to avoid temptation and obey.
We are created for relationship with the Lord. Those fleshly temptations will never satisfy, for we are created to be satisfied in Jesus only.
Dear Lord, help us take heed to Your provided way of escape and be diligent to follow Your lead and purpose. We are so blessed to be called your daughters and pray that we would glorify You for Your glory, Your kingdom’s sake, and our good. Amen.
Perfect word for me today, thank you!
Thanks for this reminder! Amen!
