“I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower and look out to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint.” Habakkuk 2:1 ESV

Here I Am, Lord

The pictures above show the remnant of Gamala, an ancient Jewish city in the Golan region. Gamala was an important stronghold during the Great Revolt in 66 CE. The Romans succeeded in capturing the city which in turn cost the lives of over 3,000 Jewish people. The citadel watchtowers no longer stand; however, you can still see the magnitude of the steep, mountainous slopes.

What will I do to listen to God’s voice? How determined and persistent am I? Am I steadfast and unwavering? Am I bold and unshakable in my approach?  Will I run up the mountain to the top of the watchtower to ready myself for God?

I will take my stand

Lord, I will stand firm and position myself to listen to You. I will wait and watch for You. “And when He brings out His own sheep, He goes before them; and the sheep follow Him, for they know His voice” (John 10:4).

at my watchpost

At my watchpost I will silently anticipate Your precious voice. “But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women – all the people of the city – fled there and shut themselves in; then they went up to the top of the tower” (Judges 9:51).

and station myself on the tower

I will stand and situate myself on the high tower in expectation of knowing You will show me Your ways and in Your time. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).

and look out to see

Help me to chisel distractions away so I can look directly at You to hear You clearly. Give me the strength to believe what I cannot see. “…though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory” (1Peter 1:8).

what You will say to me

Lord, I will press into You because You alone know my heart. “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14).

and what I will answer concerning my complaint.

My desire is to follow You no matter where You take me. I know every moment Your presence is with me and Your treasures are everlasting. “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).

Heavenly Father what great peace we find in knowing how deep You rest in each of our hearts. When we cry out to You, we yearn to hear Your voice. May we sit in our quiet fortress, opening our eyes and ears to hear Your sweet whisper. Amen.
