“Jesus Christ has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.” 1 Peter 3:22

Who Is Really In Charge?

Have you ever watched a group of young children doing imaginative play? One of them will say, “We are all kittens,” and suddenly they all act like kittens. Then she might say, “Now we are all meowing for food,” and they all start meowing. The rules can change at any time and are subject to the whims of a five-year-old.

I like to have control (when I was five, I was the one running the game). But this last year has shown me just how little control I really have. I am not running the game of life, in fact, I have very little say! Some days it feels like I wake up and check to see what the rules are for today, what is allowed and what is not.

It is comforting to know the five-year-old isn’t really in charge. She has a higher authority. Her mom is really the one caring for all the children. Whoever is above us in this life, they are not the ones really in charge. There is a higher authority:

“Jesus Christ has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him” (1 Peter 3:22).

Read that slowly. Angels are subject to Him. Authorities are subject to Him. Powers are subject to Him. Those in authority and power here on earth have a small measure of control. But ultimately, Jesus is the One at the right hand of the Father making sure we are cared for.

Lord, it sometimes feels like the rules are changing on a whim and I have very little control. Thank You that You are over the authorities in my life. Thank You for Your perfect care for us. I put my life in Your hands. In Your powerful name, Amen.
