“Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.” Acts 17:25

Our Gifts to God

Part 1

What would you give if God asked it of you? Would you, like Abraham, be willing to give what is most precious to you? Deuteronomy 16:17 says to give as we are able, according to what God has blessed us with.

Really, what is ours to give? What do we have that we have not first been given? All things already belong to God:

  • Genesis 14:19 says that God is the Possessor of heaven and earth.
  • 1 Chronicles 29:14 says that all things come from God, and we can only give Him what He has first given us.
  • Psalm 24:1 says the earth and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell in it, are the Lord’s.
  • Haggai 2:8 says that silver and gold are God’s.
  • Ezekiel 18:4 says that all souls belong to Him.
  • Psalm 95:4-5 says that the deep places of the earth are His, and the heights of the hills are His, and the sea and dry land are His.
  • Psalm 50:10 says that every beast of the forest and the cattle on a thousand hills are His.

OK, that about covers all of creation. It’s all His. What can we possibly give to Him? Scripture does tell us a number of things we can give:

  • We can give Him thanks. (Psalm 30:12; Thessalonians 2:13; Revelation 11:17)
  • We can give our ear to His Word. (Exodus 15:26)
  • We can give Him our difficulties. (Exodus 18:19)
  • We can give Him praise. (Judges 5:3)
  • We can give Him the honor He deserves. (1 Timothy 1:17)
  • We can give Him glory. (Joshua 7:19; Jeremiah 13:16)
  • We can give a tithe or offering. (Malachi 3:10; Leviticus 27:30; Deuteronomy 16:10)
  • We can (and will) give account of ourselves to Him. (Romans 14:12)
  • We can give Him our cares. (1 Peter 5:7)
  • We should only give what costs us something. (2 Samuel 24:24)
  • We can give our bodies. (Romans 12:1)
  • And of course there is the encouragement in Matthew 25:40 that whatever we give to (and do) for others is as if we have given to (and done) for Christ.

In tomorrow’s devotion, I’m going to ask you some tough questions. Today, can you list what things you have given to God that are mentioned in Scripture?

God, our hearts are toward You. Teach us to give what You desire from us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
