“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the hearts.” Proverbs 21:2

Motives

Why do you do what you do? Please stop before reading any further and contemplate this question. Now write those reasons down. There are no right or wrong answers.

Okay, let’s compare lists.

I like doing it

It makes me feel good

My mother/father told me to

My spouse told me to

My loved one needs me to

If I don’t, no one else will

I just have to

It pleases the Lord

Now here are some Scriptures to encourage us today:

“Let all that you do be done with love” (1 Corinthians 16:14).

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).

“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:14-15).

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17).

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23).

“But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts” (1 Thessalonians 2:4).

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:1).

Please choose one Scripture to meditate and act on today. You might want to encourage others to do the same.

Heavenly Father, as we make our plans for this day, please help us to check our motives and align our hearts with Yours. May we be found about Your business today. Amen.
