“For God is my King from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.” Psalm 74:12

A Mighty Work

Cultivating Awe and Reverence for God, Day 13

Walk his Way revisited —First posted in January, 2017

If I asked each of you what you think the mightiest work of God is, I’d hear a lot of different answers. My answer would be that God’s mightiest work is the work of salvation in the midst of the earth, as our opening Scripture says. It’s a complete wonder to me that God works salvation in us.

Salvation is something that angels desire to look into (1 Peter 1:12). I can see the heavenly news headlines:

“The Rebellious Get Saved.”

“Sinners Are Loved.”

“Salvation is Offered to All.”

My King is doing whatever it takes to draw people to Himself. He’s working all over the earth, right in the middle of everything else. This Scripture is a short declaration with a zillion implications for us.

This means that God is present and active in every act of nature, every life, thought, and event, at every moment of time from the beginning until the end, to work salvation in man. He is not sitting on the throne doing nothing. If it seems He is uninvolved, just watching our lives unfold, it is because there are unseen things happening that must have their perfect work in us—because this is how He works salvation in the midst of the earth. He is never inactive and never sleeps and He is never done. (Not yet, anyway.)

Long ago, a man named Alexander Smellie said, “My environment is of His determining: He means it to intensify my faith, to draw me into nearer communion with Himself, to ripen my power [or, His power working through me].”

If we are already saved, then He is working salvation in others who watch us, or who don’t watch us but whose lives will eventually be affected by our lives.

He works so that everything testifies of Him. He works to cause and bring to pass His plans. He employs His “power tools” to cause miracles. He causes weather, nature, star alignment, life, death, and the inner workings of all His creation. His Spirit moves among us to position each person in their exact environments, dwelling places, and spot on the “time line” of earth, with various callings, desires, abilities and gifts to be used so that everything comes to pass just as He wills.

And it’s all so that He can work salvation in the midst of the earth. What an amazing plan! What an unending love! What wisdom He has, knowing how to draw every man to Himself! How unselfishly He gave His Son, the perfect sacrifice, so that all men might be saved!

We cannot prostrate ourselves before Him low enough to express our heart’s response to His tender mercies and loving kindnesses.

Ah Lord God, we express our sincerest thanks for all You have done to work salvation in the midst of us. We would truly be lost without You. Hallelujah!
