“Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add onecubit to his stature?” Matthew 6:26-27

Baby Robin

Looking up from my Bible, I noticed a baby bird flutter past my window falling into my rosebush. The mommy robin landed often to encourage flight, but the baby was too afraid to leave the branch. I watched longer than I care to admit, riveted by momma bird’s tenacity.

Scripture makes it clear that God is a “bird watcher.” He loves and cares about all birds. I too enjoy “bird-watching” the robins, doves, hummingbirds and the small wild birds that come to our feeders. I love an old favorite poem by Elizabeth Cheney:

“The Robin and the Sparrow”

Said the robin to the sparrow,
“I should really like to know,

Why these anxious human beings
rush about and worry so.”

Said the sparrow to the robin,
“Friend I think that it must be,

That they have no Heavenly Father
such as cares for you and me.”

Sometimes we take onto ourselves anxiety, worries, and burdens that cause stress. Psalm 55:22 reminds us to cast our burden on the Lord and He will sustain us.

God provides for the birds when they cry out to Him, so how much more will He provide for His children?“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s will. Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Matthew 10: 29-31).

The baby robin that fell into my rosebush was watched by her mommy, who continued to come alongside her baby. Our heavenly Father also watched, knowing exactly where the little bird had landed. It takes my breath away to try to capture the Father heart of God and His great love for His creatures and each of us personally. Nothing escapes His eye. No one escapes His loving care.

“Thank You, Lord, for watching over the sparrows (and robins), and watching over me. I am so undeserving, yet You gave Your all for me. Words cannot express my gratitude for Your unchanging, unconditional, totally indescribable love. I will never understand it, but I am forever grateful. You never cease to amaze me, Lord. Thank You.”
