“He will cover you with His feathers. And under His wings you will find refuge, His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Psalm 91:4 (NIV)

My family recently visited a newly built church settled in a large, crowded parking lot.  When we opened the car doors, my husband spotted a killdeer sitting on a nest of spotted eggs in plain sight (if you look closely you can see the eggs). Mama killdeer did not budge from her eggs. However, if we approached her, she started yelling at us with a piercing chatter. When we backed away, she would stop her frantic squawks.  She did not want anyone to threaten her babies and was bold in telling us.

After church mama killdeer was still there with her wings and body covering as many eggs as she could. Her sentiment was, “Do not touch—these babies are mine!” She showed affection and motherly love and would do anything to shield them from a perilous situation.

“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem” (Isaiah 66:13).

I often meditate on how God loves and cares for me even though I am undeserving. He holds us passionately in His protective arms where we can take refuge. To God we will always remain special children (women). He is with us, He will strengthen us, He will help us, and He upholds us with His right hand.

“But let all who take refuge in You be glad, let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in you” (Psalm 5:11 NIV).

“Heavenly Father, Your protection over us is like no other. You rescue us from predators in our midst daily. Thank You for making us Your treasured possessions and that we can take refuge in the shadow of Your wings. Amen.”
