“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.” 1 John 4:10

Love Letters

I am planning a trip that will take me very far away from my husband and my children. I will be away longer than I ever have been separated from any of them. It has inspired me to write love letters to each of them—precisely, an individual letter for each of them for each of the days we will be apart. That adds up to 60 letters! My letters are filled with intent, details, and especially my love for them. When I’m writing them, I am thinking about how much they will love opening each one and reading my loving words to them. I think about how they will surely anticipate with much excitement opening them and reading them!

I began to think about things in a spiritual context as the LORD began to reveal amazing things to me—especially that how I feel about writing to them and them reading my letters is how He feels about us reading His precious Word, His love letter. He doesn’t get any benefit out of me reading the Bible, but I believe it DOES give Him joy to teach us, love on us, and guide us through His living Word.

I considered what happens in my life when I am not faithful to read the Word and what God’s perspective might be. My life certainly can turn upside down quickly when I am not re-filling with the Word and taking in the daily reminders of His perfect love for me. I wonder if it saddens God to know what special treasure I have missed out on when I “skip” a day or two of reading. How would I feel upon my return to find some, if not all, my love letters unopened? I will not have lost anything by them not reading them, but I would be sad that they didn’t get to read my special words in my absence from them!

Having this unique perspective has made me look at reading my Bible in a new way. It is not meant to be a chore, but a delight to read how He loves me!

Today’s verse is just one of hundreds demonstrating God’s precious love for us. For you. For me. The WHOLE Bible is just love letter after love letter to us. May we approach the Word with the eagerness I am certain my loved ones will have when opening each of my letters to them.

“Dear LORD, thank You for how sweetly You love us and for every perfectly placed Word in the Bible. I am so grateful that You are the lover of my soul, so constantly, faithfully pursuing me.”
