“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory; the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and on earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head over all.” 1 Chronicles 29:11
Soli Deo Gloria
The Sovereign God is exalted as head over all. He wills, plans, and determines all that is. He creates and purposes and brings it to pass. He knows the end from the beginning. This is an all-encompassing truth that spans all ages and extends into eternity. All the purposes of God are worked out in His sovereignty.
I love words. I love to read novels and biographies and magazines and documentary accounts of adventure and travel. I am comfortable with English and its idiosyncrasies and am competent in spelling. I enjoy broadening my vocabulary and searching out why we use certain phrases as we do. For example, “Mind your p’s and q’s” comes from the Irish pints and quarts of whiskey or beer, so that to mind your p’s and q’s means to be sober and civil. Ah, yes, I do love words.
My husband, however, has little use for them in written form. He reads the news and the Bible. If something is to be written, I am called upon to accomplish the task. So, much to his irritation and frustration, he was asked one day to write out what the Lord spoke to him in a quiet time. Begrudgingly he did so. He read over it and thought it made no sense and wondered that he had even put the words to paper. He folded it up and put it in his Bible.
Later that very afternoon he was in a counseling session with two parties who had tried unsuccessfully to heal their shattered relationship. They were both at their wit’s end. This same sovereign God who had given my husband the perfect words in the morning spoke to him and said what you wrote is for this individual. He handed her the folded paper from his Bible and as she read it, she wept. Nothing had gotten through to her heart until she read those words scrawled across a yellow page.
A few weeks later my husband received a note that expressed a changed heart. The persons who were at odds at every turn were now finding restoration. The relationship was on the mend and growing in understanding and love.
The sovereign God knew all along that He wanted these two to love one another again. The sovereign God used a man who had no knowledge of their need or any ability to transform their relationship—a man who had no gifting in writing. It was His Spirit moving, His words written, and His purposes fulfilled.
“I know that You can do everything and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You” (Job 42:2).
He is watching over us and orchestrating all things for our good. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory.
“Father, it is an astounding thing to witness how You move and act in our fallen world. You surprise us, You stagger us, and You leave us in wonder. How beautifully and how richly You express Yourself to our hearts. I am glad that You reign, and all things are in Your absolute control. Amen.”
Amen, this is awesome. I’m reminded that he works all things according to His plans. We are not locked in to only be used by Him in the things we think are our gifts…..He’s WAY bigger than that! Thank you.
He IS astounding in the way he deals with us and takes care of us!
