“Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.” Genesis 24:15

What a Difference a Moment Can Make

I’ve been studying Rebekah this week and her story really impressed me. She came to the well one day and met a man who had come looking for a bride for his master Abraham’s son, Isaac. (You can read her full story in Genesis 24.) The arrangements for Rebekah to become Isaac’s bride were made overnight and she agreed to leave with the servant the very next day. Can you imagine what bravery that took to go to a place far from home with a man you just met to marry a total stranger? Have you had moments in your life like that? The only thing that comes close in my life is the night I opened my dad’s front door to go on a blind date with a young man who eventually became my husband. I’m so glad it took longer than a day for that to happen.

Throughout the course of time there was one moment that made all the difference for the entire human race.

“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His Spirit” (John 19:30).

The final sacrifice for all mankind was made on the cross that day. The One who was fully God and fully man in Jesus Christ, because no other payment would do, paid the debt for humanity Himself—in a moment. What we do about Jesus’ moment makes all the difference for us. We either accept His payment or we reject it. The choice is ours.

If you haven’t chosen Jesus, now can be your moment. “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9 NIV).

If you have chosen Jesus, what will you do with the moments that you have left? “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16).

“Father, we thank You for Your moment on the cross that paid for us. And thank You for the moment we have right here, right now. Help us to choose Your way today as we go forth into the world, making the most of every opportunity. Give us Your strength, Your wisdom, Your guidance, and Your love for those around us. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.”
