“Behold, As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of the maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God until He has mercy on us.” Psalm 123:2
Watching For His Hand
I love this beautiful Psalm with the picture of the submissive servant girl anticipating her mistress’s needs and wanting to please her. Oh, I so want this heart for the Lord.
Waiting isn’t fun. I’m so impatient with traffic lights, computers, lines at the bank—I even find myself finishing people’s sentences for them because I don’t want to wait. I’m so happy the Lord has extreme patience and mercy with me. I’m seeing God’s grace and love as He teaches me patience because only in this patience can I hear His voice and see His hand.
“But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:4).
Walking by faith takes patience for God’s timing as we love others by the power of the Holy Spirit. I’ve jumped ahead many times and gotten in trouble, yet the Lord in His gracious mercy and love uses it for a growth opportunity, reassuring me He has this and I can rest with eyes fixed on Him. My heart is at peace because I am “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2).
This is where my eyes need to stay, watching His hand—anticipating His moves and prompting, because “in Him (only) do we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
What does this look like as we continue in our days? When we feel that urge of irritation from our impatience, we need to remember that He is in control, and time is in His capable hands. May we be reminded that only by watching Him and living lives pleasing to Him are we truly satisfied. It may take some waiting and discomfort, but we know He is working all things for His and our good, and in His time we will have complete joy. I believe this is where He wants us to stay.
“Dear Heavenly Father, may we come to You knowing You are the lover of our souls, in confidence keeping our eyes on You and Your leading. You give us enough light for the step we are taking. May we grow in patience and love knowing You have this and are in complete control. Please continue to guide us in Your love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
I’ve always admired the peace in the older generations, and now that I’m ‘here’, it’s finally getting thru to my spirit that it does no good to be impatient or try to push thru when things aren’t hopping along. All it does is cause unrest and dissatisfaction when I could spend the time more constructively or just enjoying the ‘free time’.
I am so guilty of being impatient often! Great reminders.
