“Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

Wisdom From God

Part 3

This past five years, I have been following the Discipleship Bible Reading Plan. It has been such a blessing in my life! How do you feel when you can’t have coffee first thing in the morning because you must go to the lab for a fasting blood test? Deprived, right? That’s my sentiment when I can’t read my Bible! Reading God’s Word is our spiritual nourishment. It is the sustenance that makes us grow tall in the Lord. The Bible is also like a mirror that shows us how we look. To make it work, we must pick it up! It will show us anything we need to change and how to change it. It is our God-given manual of knowledge and wisdom!

For the past two days, we’ve been looking at the purpose of God’s Word in our lives. Once we find ourselves in right relationship with God through our faith in Jesus, we will want to develop and expand our relationship with the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our comforter and counselor. He reveals truth and depth in God’s Word, which helps us increasingly know the Father and the Son, enlarging our sense of awe and reverence. We gain insight into the character of God as we see Jesus model wisdom, justice, and love in action, because Jesus is the exact representation of His Father. He told us that if we know Him, then we know the Father. During our thorough study and scrutiny of the Bible, the Holy Spirit empowers the very words we read to change us! This is sanctification, the process of making us holy—a life-long process!

If we apply what we read to our hearts and ask God to enable us, we will grow to reflect Jesus more and more with our lives. “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart” (Proverbs 27:19).

For our efforts, God promises a beautiful reward: “This is the covenant I will make with them…says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds” (Hebrews 10:16). Imagine the depths of God’s caring and guidance, that He would engrave upon our minds and hearts His directives to help us navigate this life!

In Ephesians 2:10, Paul proclaims, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” This three-part series on God’s wisdom is a leap of faith for me, a jumping from reading God’s Word for my own instruction to sharing the treasure of God’s Word with others. My hope is that the Holy Spirit might inspire your heart to a closer, more fruitful walk with Him.

“Dear Lord, we are Your handiwork, Your work of art. You have a plan for our lives and as we grow in knowledge of who You are, in wisdom from You, and desire to be obedient to Your commandments, grow us in our service to one another that we might increasingly reflect the image of Your Son. With reverence for how majestic You are, all glory be to You! Amen.”
