“And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said…” Genesis 1:2-3

Then God Said

Don’t you just love the way the Bible begins, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said…” (Genesis 1:1-3).

“Then God said…” Before anything, there was God. No explanation. He was always there, eternally, unexplainable God. He was before creation. He was Creator. He is an Artist, a Master Craftsman, an Artisan beyond compare. He is so full of light and life that He takes the nothing, the darkness, the emptiness and brings forth beauty and purpose. Life bursts forth in splendid magnificence.

He hovered over us. Perhaps He was considering how His resplendent work would be manifested. Colors, smells, textures, movement, grandeur, microscopic intricacies were all woven together in a grand display of stunning loveliness. Perhaps He was seeing the souls of men He would one day die to save. Perhaps He was seeing you and me.

I can only imagine the anticipation, the stillness, and the tension in that brooding, beautiful hovering. BOOM! Then God said! And so begins a majestic revelation as He speaks creation into existence. From that moment of first creation God has spoken to the hearts of men. God is still speaking. Hebrews tells us God has spoken by the prophets to our fathers and in these last days He speaks to us through His Son Jesus.

“Then God said…” Can you hear Him?

“Father, Your Word is truth and faithfulness. We read of You. We hear You in lines of Scripture. We listen for Your Spirit’s whisper to our hearts. We hear You as You sing over us. Word of God, speak! Amen.”
