“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’” John 4: 13-14

Water, Word, & Wi-Fi

I have many memories from a trip to Israel, but there is one that really stands out. I had become separated from our group and was trying to catch up so I could hear the daily devotion that was to be shared. Alas, I was not successful. I realized at the end of my adventure the three W’s that helped me get through and eventually out of my situation.

It was a very hot morning and I had to walk quickly for approximately 20-30 minutes. I needed WATER. Looking for a precious item I’d lost reminded me of the parable of the lost coin in my Bible—the WORD. I thought our tour bus and group had left without me since I didn’t find it in the location I had left from, so another tour bus was going to take me to the next location. I realized that I could access the Internet from that bus to communicate with my group—WI-FI. I joked at the end that all you need is the three W’s – Water, Word, and Wi-Fi.

This was a very scary and panicky situation for me! I look back at it with humor now. But it made me think about life, and the plans God has for us, and the things we need.

Physically, we need water to survive. 60% of the adult body is composed of water and every living cell needs it to function. Research shows that we can go no longer than 10 days without water. Jesus knows that to function properly we need water daily, but we also need His daily everlasting water to be fruitful spiritually. The most basic way I know to get more of Him comes in just talking with Him and spending time in the Word seeking His best for us. He already knows all that He has in store for us each day. He knows what we need. I want to always want THAT more than what plans I have or needs I think I have.

I learned in my situation that no experience with God is wasted. He uses every shred of every situation for His glory and our good, even—and sometimes especially—the bad and the ugly stuff of our lives. On that other tour bus, I even had a divine appointment with a lady who knew Jesus and needed prayer!

In conclusion, I realize that I don’t truly need Wi-Fi to survive (although sometimes I treat it like a need). God does use tools like this to further His kingdom—and we might even discover that our tour bus is only yards away waiting to welcome us back aboard!

“Dear Jesus, as we go about our day, help us to remember that You are in control and have everything we need for today. Thank You for Your precious Word and Your everlasting water. Please use us to bless those around us. Amen.”
