“…He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being…” Acts 17:27-28

Unseen

Recently I experienced a whale-watching boat excursion. There I was in a place of beauty with a gentle breeze in my face. Our boat cut through the waves of a deep blue sea and all around me were hills made lush by abundant green foliage. I was basking in the warmth of a tropical sun and the magnificence of the creation displayed before me.

People moved around the boat, talking, eating, and drinking. Some went to the upper deck while others preferred the rail down below. There was a low buzz of conversation and outbreaks of laughter. The whales did not disappoint. They put on a majestic show.

At a point in the excursion the crew lowered a hydrophone into the waters. What we then heard was piercingly beautiful and resplendent. No one moved. No one spoke. In utter silence and amazement we listened to the song of the whales.

It struck me later in the day how magnificent was that haunting song. I had appreciated the wonder of all I had seen in water, sky, and sea and yet I had no concept of the beauty I was missing that was just as present with me as the things I could see and touch. I thought then of the God who is ever present with me even though I cannot see or touch Him. He is beyond my senses, but no less wondrous, no less real.  He is near and He is beautiful. It befits me to be silent and still before Him. It is a thing of wonder that if I wait before Him, I will hear His song.

“Let the King of my heart be the wind within my sails,

The anchor in the waves

Oh He is my song

Let the King of my heart be the fire in my veins,

The echo of my days

Oh He is my song”*

“Amen!”
