Remember that nothing is certain in this life.” Ecclesiastes 7:10-14 NLT

Reminiscing

The other day, on my way home from a business appointment, I was inspired to take a drive through some of the neighborhoods that were affected by the Carr Fire a year ago.

As I drove through the various subdivisions and the outskirt areas of Redding, my heart began to ache for the people who lost their homes and or property. There was evidence of debris on vacant lots; some of the lots were cleared, and others were in the process of being cleared or rebuilt. I also noticed that many lots, acreage, and homes were available for sale.

Even though I’ve experienced the same loss of my home in that fire, my heart grieves for all who were affected in the same manner. I couldn’t help but wonder how they were doing right now—emotionally, financially, and physically. Many questions filled my being as I drove through the various areas. Are they ok? Do they have love and support from family, friends, church, or community? Are they alone, or do they feel alone? Have they encountered many entanglements or delays in the rebuilding process? Did they have insurance? Did they make the decision to move out of the area or buy a new home in our local community, or are they living in an RV, staying with family or friends, or renting in the interim? Are they happy where they are living in the present? Whatever choice was made by them, or whatever choices or decisions that they are still facing or contemplating—these families encounter uncertainties every day.

I do reminisce about the good ol’ days; however, my heart is not there. My heart is in my new dwelling place because that is where my Lord has me—He has the best future in store for me. I still face grief at times, but the Lord continues to comfort me, and gives me strength as He guides me one day at a time…and I am happy in my place at the present.

“Lord, thank You for what you’re accomplishing in my life today.
