\u201cWho has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, or with the breadth of His hand marked off the heavens?\u201d<\/em>
\nIsaiah 40:12a NIV<\/span><\/p>\n

Handbreadths<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Who in the above verse is the Sovereign LORD Who is coming in power (Isaiah 40:10). Try as I might, I can\u2019t really wrap my head around the vastness or the strength of the Lord. He must have a pretty enormous hand for the breadth (or width) of it to mark off the heavens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In comparison, the handbreadth or width of a person\u2019s hand has been standardized to equal four inches, and is used, among other things, to measure the height of a horse (i.e., the horse stands \u201c20 hands\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

And as for the days of man: \u201cBehold, You have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah\u201d<\/em> (Psalm 39:5 ESV).<\/span><\/p>\n

As I sit staring at my own handbreadth, I am so in awe of God I can hardly breathe. In the light of an eternal God our lives are nothing\u2026 and yet, with all that power, all that strength, \u201cHe will feed His flock like a shepherd, He will carry the lambs in His arms, holding them close to His heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with her young\u201d<\/em> (Isaiah 40:11 NIV).<\/span><\/p>\n

Revelation 7:17 tells us, \u201cFor the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.\u201d<\/em> The same hand that holds the oceans will wipe away our every tear. Amazing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The words to the Casting Crowns song \u201cWho am I\u201d* comes to mind:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho am I, that the Lord of all the earth<\/span>
\nWould care to know my name<\/span>
\nWould care to feel my hurt?….<\/span>
\nWho am I, that the eyes that see my sin<\/span>
\nWould look on me with love<\/span>
\nAnd watch me rise again?<\/span>
\nWho am I, that the Voice that calmed the sea<\/span>
\nWould call out through the rain<\/span>
\nAnd calm the storm in me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And the answer is given in the two choruses:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am a flower quickly fading<\/span>
\nHere today and gone tomorrow<\/span>
\nA wave tossed in the ocean<\/span>
\nA vapor in the wind<\/span>
\nStill You hear me when I’m calling<\/span>
\nLord, You catch me when I’m falling<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd You’ve told me who I am<\/span>
\nI am Yours<\/span>
\nNot because of who I am<\/span>
\nBut because of what You’ve done<\/span>
\nNot because of what I’ve done<\/span>
\nBut because of who You are\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The final thing I know about the Lord\u2019s hands? He has inscribed us on their palms (Isaiah 49:16)\u2014in the form of nail scars from the Cross.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLord, thank You for the oceans and the heavens You\u2019ve created. Thank You that even though we are mere human handbreadths, You love us, lead us and spread Your hands out to die for us, because we are Yours. Amen.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
