When I Stare At the Sea

Walk His Way Revisited

If I really knew how big God was, I would probably be a lot more apt to worship Him sooner. I would probably run to Him first with all of my problems, and I would probably be on my face before Him and in His Presence as much as possible. In the business of life, in the chaos of the everyday usuals, I so frequently forget how completely un-usual my God is. How completely outside the ordinary, outside the small, and outside the insignificant He is.

Then I go to the ocean.

As I stare out over that huge vastness, I wonder at the mysteries beneath the surface that my eyes can see, and beneath the surface beyond my visual comprehension. Separate oceans and seas, yet one huge entity covering the whole earth. A place man can never fully inhabit or understand. A place of hidden mystery and incredible wonder. I think of all the ships lost and all the lives claimed in that huge beast of a sea, and I think about its torrents and waves and currents. The ocean is always moving, always filled with life. The ocean is big. It’s far bigger than I could ever begin to comprehend. Who could make such a thing?

God did.

Staring at the ocean helps me to better understand the utter vastness of God. We grow up hearing of space, and the massive stars and planets filling it, and that helps us better understand the very bigness of our Creator God. But there is something about the visual. There is something about staring into that great expanse of deadly and beautiful water and seeing how big God is. There is something sweet about acknowledging my own tininess and utter insignificance. There is something precious in knowing that God is that big, even bigger really, and He knows me still.

Thank You, God, for setting beauty before my eyes that reminds Me of your greatness. Help me to remember daily just how big You are. May that realization prompt me to worship You in spirit and in truth. Amen.
