“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9:13

My Rainbow

Decades ago on my way to work, a storm during the night had left the streets puddled with water. The morning was dawning, a light rain was now falling, and the sun was playing peek-a-boo with the clouds. It was a glistening picture of freshness seeing nature wake up clean from having a good shower the night before. Traffic was light that morning, and looking back, that was a gift, because what I was about to experience could not have penetrated my soul with awe if traffic were heavy.

As I made my way down the hilly street, I saw before me the end of a rainbow that seemed to land right in the middle of the street! I got excited seeing that I was going to drive through a rainbow and wondered what that would be like. No cars were near me. It was as if God had made this moment just for me and no one else. So, I slowed down to a crawl and drove ever so slowly! The inside of my car was one huge mass of color! I felt I had gone to heaven and that this was what heaven would be like. I really wanted to just park my car and stay in this magical moment, but wisdom quickly motioned me forward so I would not cause a rear-end collision if a car suddenly approached. From that moment, I was rainbow struck. My rainbow became my life’s signature because, although this event might not be able to happen in the natural realm, it was a supernatural gift from the Lord.

Years later when I was pregnant with my first child, I made the nursery into a rainbow theme. I used the colors in the rainbow to make a quilt for my baby, bumper pads for the crib, and other accessories to complete the room. I hung the quilt on the wall across from the crib so the baby would wake up to the quilt’s show of color.

Still to this day I love rainbows. They remind me of God’s promise after the flood to never send a flood to destroy the earth again. They also remind me of God’s other promises in His Word and that He always keeps His promises. My favorite promise for my life, which has given me comfort and assurance that I am not alone, is, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua1:5). He never has.

The next time you see a rainbow after a storm, reflect on the promises of God. Grab hold of one promise for your life, and thank Him for keeping it. God never fails and is trustworthy.

“Heavenly Father, thank You for all the promises in Your Word. You have kept every one. You are trustworthy. You are the God Most High, El Elyon. We thank You for the visual reminder of Your promises whenever we see a rainbow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
