“You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14,16

Lighthouses

On the coast where we used to live, there is a working lighthouse that shines its lantern and is manned by a lighthouse keeper. Many fishing boats and ships rely on this lighthouse’s beaming light during storms and the darkest nights to safely guide them from dangerous rocks in the ocean to the harbor. Lighthouses shine their lights as a good deed to keep ships safe. Because lighthouses are doing their jobs, sailors reap the benefits of safety and are grateful for the lighted navigation.

When my sons were in elementary and middle school, I prayed each day with them at the front door before they left for school. I asked God to make them little lighthouses. I prayed that He would let their little lights shine through their actions in the classroom and on the playground to bring God glory. As they exited the door, I kissed them goodbye and reminded them who they are and Whose they are. As an answer to my prayers, sometimes I received a comment from their teachers regarding their good conduct at school. I thanked the teacher and smiled, knowing the lighthouse lesson shone deep in their young hearts and escaped through their actions.

We can all be lighthouses for God. We can let our light shine in a dark and fallen world by doing good deeds and showing kindness and love to others. May our actions praise our Heavenly Father and brighten the world around us.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You that You make each of us lighthouses to shine Your love in a dark world through the life we lead. Holy Spirit, keep our light shining to bring glory to God’s name. For Jesus’ sake, Amen.”
