“Whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” Romans 10:13, 14

Lights, Lines, and Laws

Lately I’ve been thinking about the similarities of driving a car and Christian living. Those non-physical restraints (traffic lights, lines on the streets, and laws of the road) have the ability to control and direct traffic and pedestrians orderly and safely when those laws are known and obeyed. But all those lines and lights would do no good if people did not know the law, what those signs mean, and how to follow them. We know that anyone wanting to operate a vehicle must first take a test to make sure they know these laws before they can get a license to drive. That way they and others may safely reach their destinations. But if these laws are not obeyed, serious penalties and consequences will surely result.

Think how dangerous and chaotic it would be if everyone did “what was right in their own eyes” while traveling on our highways and byways.

It’s similar to spiritual laws. We need to know, respect, and obey them in order to reach our destination—heaven—and in the process get know and love the One who paved the way for us to get there.

Think about all the warning signs and instructions we are given in the Bible:

  •   One Way: there is only one way to the Father and that is through His Son Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).
  •   No U-Turn (except to repent).
  •   Stop
  •   Yield
  •   Slow
  •   Do Not Pass
  •   Keep To Right
  •   Do Not Enter

I believe there are many people who have no idea what sin is or what God says about it. They don’t know the bad news/good news and the “Romans Road to Salvation” (Romans 3:10, 23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8). If they don’t know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, they would naturally do what is right in their own eyes, vainly hoping to get to heaven by their own goodness.

If people don’t know the Law, how can they understand and properly respond to it? And how can they know the Person who set them free from the curse of the Law if no one tells them? How can they know it is a matter of life and death?

“The Lord is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Let’s shine His light so the blind can see their need, make a U-Turn, and live!

“Jesus, You are the Light we follow. You show us lines we are not to cross and laws we are to obey. Guide us to those who need to hear the truth of Your law, Your love, Your grace, and Your gift of salvation.”
