“And in HIM was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness, but the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:4-5

Celebrating His Light

Brilliant Christmas lights light up neighborhoods. I love all the yard displays this time of year. One of our favorite traditions is an evening set aside to drive through the lit-up neighborhoods.

Why do we decorate with lights at Christmas time? Is it just tradition, just a festive expression? I believe there’s a much deeper meaning: Jesus is the light of the world. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father” (John 1:14).

“I AM the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12).

“The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light has dawned” (Matthew 4:16).

“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me, should not abide in darkness” (John 12:46).

Who really likes the dark? I feel extremely uncomfortable walking on a dark night without street lights. It’s scary. There could be all kinds of mean things around lurking and ready to attack me. Who wants to hang out in the dark? Those hiding from truth, not wanting to be seen? Those who do not want their true motive exposed?

Coming to God in truth involves exposure to the light. God always sees, but unbelievers ignore it, and Him. They think they are getting away with something. Reality is that there is such freedom being exposed to God’s truth. We don’t have to hide anymore. He sees all of our sin; we may as well agree with Him (confess) and allow the Holy Spirit to powerfully replace the old lies and lifestyle with newness and freshness of truth, love and life!

That’s why we celebrate Jesus’ birth! He came that we would have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10b). Halleluiah! What a Savior! He certainly allows us to fully enjoy life and each other.

This Christmas may we draw close to His light, and be reminded each time we see beautiful Christmas lights that He is the True Light we celebrate! Enjoy fellowship with other believers and sharing His love in a dark world as we enjoy His presence always with us!

“Jesus, thank You for coming to give us Your light showing us the way to the Father through You. May we be so in love with You that we are contagious to this dark world around us; we pray that they may also want Your love and truth.”
