“We love Him because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

Love at First Sight

I had the opportunity to drive the kids to school one morning, though usually they take the bus. I had a surprise in store for them—I was taking them to get a hot cocoa before class and it was so pleasing to me to look at each of them, contented just to be driven by Mommy to school, not even knowing of the other surprise awaiting them.

This makes me think of how adoring our heavenly Father is, and how He desires to give us good gifts. In Luke 11:11-13 the Word says, “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone?…If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

I was looking at them and their cute little faces in the rear view mirror when my youngest son, with the sweetest look on his face, said, “Mommy?”

I replied, “Yes, son?”

“I love you!”

I replied, “I love you too, sweetheart!” Then I said, “I LOVE it when you say it first!”

Funny how everyday life is not wasted on God. I instantly recalled today’s verse. The way I felt when I heard that from my son is how He wants us to feel His tender love towards us.

We can only display love towards God (or anyone else for that matter) because He loved us first!

“Dear Lord, thank You for placing daily reminders in our lives of Your love towards us. Help us to receive that love and remain in Your Word so that we can love others with Your love.”
