“…Thus far the Lord has helped us.” 1 Samuel 7:12

Memory Lane

Recently I went through closets and cupboards cleaning out the clutter and reorganizing the keepsakes. One of the things that involved was the conversion of old videotapes to DVR’s. These were videotapes that had been previously converted from 8 mm movies! They were the memories of not only our own ancient history, but the history of our parents. Some of the scenes went back to a 1940’s San Francisco during the World War II era.

It got me to thinking of how far we had come. I considered who I was when these memories were made and who I had since become. It brought back other times, other homes, other relationships. They brought to mind how far the Lord had carried us, the lessons He had patiently taught us, and how He had been faithful even before we had acknowledged Him. He loved us then and He loves us still.

There have been milestones along this spiritual road. There have been fearful battles and humbling defeats and incredible victories. In every circumstance God remained constant and abiding. Like Samuel, I can say, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

I want to suggest that you take a sentimental journey and bring to mind all that the Lord has been to you over the years in every circumstance. It’s a good exercise in humility and thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is coming. I can smell the pumpkin spice in the air even now! Prepare your heart to praise Him.

“We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near” (Psalm 75:1).

“Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name; the upright shall dwell in Your presence” (Psalm 140:13).

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).

“Father, I could never have foreseen this life of love and adventure and wonder. I am so grateful for Your grace to me. May I be found ever praising You! Amen.”
