“And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’” Exodus 3:14
Have You Lost Your Awe?
Within the last year or so there have been two children that have drowned. Miraculously, God intervened and saved their little lives and for that we give Him all the glory and praise! But most recently there was a third little child that drowned. The prayer teams prayed just like for the other two but this little one went home to be with the Lord. When things like this happen we tend to question, “Why, God? Why didn’t You save this one? We prayed just like we did for the others. Why?”
What do you do? What will you say to the parents that lost their little one? Will you get mad at God? Are you disillusioned enough with Jesus that you will now plot against Him?
Judas was like that. Judas was called by the Messiah just like the others. He walked with Jesus for three and half years just like the other disciples. He saw the miraculous. He ate with Jesus and spoke with Him; but Judas expected something from Jesus that wasn’t in the Father’s plan and for that Judas betrayed the Son of God into the hands of sinful men. We must be careful that we don’t do the same thing.
“What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! For He says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion’’’ (Romans 9:14-15).
God is God and we are not. His ways are not our ways. His plans are not subject to ours. We must humbly accept the course that we find ourselves on after tragedy strikes and seek God’s wisdom, grace and mercy to carry on.
Mercy Me has put out a song that is fitting for these kinds of questions in life. The song is called Even If. Here are the lyrics of the chorus and bridge:
I know You’re able and I know You can Save through the fire with Your mighty hand But even if You don’t My hope is You alone I know the sorrow, and I know the hurt Would all go away if You’d just say the word But even if You don’t My hope is You alone You’ve been faithful, You’ve been good All of my days Jesus, I will cling to You Come what may ‘Cause I know You’re able I know You can*
“Father, our hearts hurt terribly when we think You should answer us one way and You choose another. Please forgive us when we are tempted to be disillusioned with You. Help us to accept Your will and walk with You still. In the name of Jesus, Amen.”
I saw so many miracles in my early walk with the Lord during the ‘Jesus People’ days, I expected Divine Protection from life’s tragedies for many years. Alas… reality is hard. He rains on the just and on the unjust…
Amen.
God is good all the time and all the time God is good…when my eyes see it and when they don’t…when my heart feels it and when it doesn’t…
