“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2

God Creates in the Void

A Prayer

“Oh God, You Who sit on the throne of heaven, overseeing all things and all peoples—You Who create things from emptiness and void and formlessness—it is You we call upon to do what only You can do.

“We bring our children and other beloveds before You—those who are too young to understand, and those who are decidedly old enough to understand—and ask You to create in them a clean heart. In those devoid of any desire, create a desire to know You and obey You. Create emptiness in them where they are filled with worldliness. Create a new heart of flesh where there is only a heart of stone.

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created” (Revelation 4:11).

“Bring into being a hunger and thirst for righteousness. Bring forth purpose where there is only aimlessness. Show them a path where there is wandering. Bring to life that person You designed them to be in the beginning. Create light in their minds where there is now only darkness.

“Give them eyes and ears to see and hear Your glories, Your beauty, Your majesty. Create a preeminence of love in their lives. In all these places—mind, heart, soul, and body—create a zeal for the things that pertain to life and godliness.

“Create in them a hatred of sin, shame, addiction, and bondage. Bring forth a desire, where none now exists, for a new, clean heart, for a life of peace, for holiness. Create invisible attributes in their mind and spirit that will strengthen and embolden them to live for Christ.

“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16).

“And now, O Lord, bring into being what does not exist. Speak into the void of our loved ones’ lives. Let them know Your fullness, Your power, Your holiness, Your majesty. Let their darkness become light, their emptiness become abundance, their ignorance become knowledge and understanding.

“By Your Spirit, and for Your glory, we pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
