“The thief does not come except to steal, kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

The Opportunist

Someone was lurking around the side of the building when my husband pulled his truck up to the back door of the store to load up something he had purchased. Unfortunately my husband, anticipating a quick transfer, left the truck running and the driver’s door open as he stepped to the back of the truck to load the item. Next thing he knew, his truck was heading out of the parking lot and disappearing down the street.

Thinking back, my husband vaguely remembered seeing a person standing there, but it did not register in his mind that it was of any significance.

It made me think about how the enemy of our souls, Satan, is an opportunist who is out to steal, kill and destroy. The Word says he prowls around like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8), but he is so cunning, sneaky, and deceitful, he most often does not warn us with his roar. His roar is not meant to warn us, but to paralyze us with fear. The Word warns us to be watchful, alert, and sober-minded.

I want to be an opportunist for Jesus, so I need to be watchful and alert to what is going on around me, not only physically, but spiritually. I want to take advantage of opportunities the Lord provides to be about His business. I don’t want to be caught off guard, or become distracted by tunnel vision.

“Lord, help us to be alert, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Give us eyes to see the things You want us to see, and be willing to act on how You lead us. Amen.”
